Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
