Vladimir Kramnik Denies Wrongdoing in Passing of American Grandmaster Naroditsky

The former world champion has spoken out after the tragic passing of US chess star Daniel Naroditsky, describing the 29-year-old's demise as a heartbreaking event while accusing critics for mounting what he termed an "deeply cynical and illegal targeted harassment" against him and his family.

Kramnik's Statement

The 50-year-old ex-champion, who has faced broad criticism for alleging Naroditsky of online cheating lacking proof, expressed condolences but rejected any individual targeting.

"Despite the tensions, I was the only person in the chess community who, noticing on video Daniel's apparent health concerns a day before his death, openly urged for him to receive help," Kramnik declared. "The subsequent attempts, right after his passing, to explicitly connect this sorrowful incident to my name … cross all boundaries of basic human morality."

Kramnik said his earlier requests for examination of Naroditsky's online play had been overlooked "even with substantial proof", and claimed he would provide material to "any relevant authority". He noted his lawyers were drafting civil and criminal suits over "false accusations" that have led to threats against him and his family.

Police Findings

The demise of the grandmaster may have been the result of a drug overdose and is being examined as a potential self-harm case, based on a police report released Thursday. A statement from Charlotte authorities says Naroditsky was found dead Sunday evening and describes the case as a "Investigation into sudden death."

"Last Sunday, October 19 at around 7:11 PM, officers responded to an emergency medical request in the area of 9000 Colin Crossing," the report says. "When they reached the scene, an unresponsive subject was located and later declared dead by a medic."

Community Reaction

Anger over Kramnik's conduct has dominated the chess world. Hikaru Nakamura described his actions "disgusting", while reigning champion Magnus Carlsen labeled it "terrible". GM from India Sarin, who faced Naroditsky in his last digital game, accused Kramnik of "causing a death", saying his self-appointed pursuit against suspected cheaters was ineffective and "completely unacceptable".

Grandmaster's Impact

A graduate of Stanford and ex-youth titleholder, Naroditsky amassed over 800,000 followers on streaming platforms. Referred to as Danya, he was praised for his humor, clarity and humility, becoming a prominent figure in chess's pandemic-era boom. He was also among the globe's top competitors under shorter time controls, placing ninth at last year's blitz world championship in New York.

Naroditsky repeatedly refuted the allegations but acknowledged the toll they had taken on his mental health. "Since the Kramnik controversy, I feel like if I begin performing strongly, people assume the worst," Naroditsky said in his final livestream.

Organizational Statements

The World Chess Federation said this week it was "looking into" Kramnik's actions. "Kramnik's methodology simply can't be accepted," Fide chief executive Emil Sutovsky stated. The federation intends to commemorate Naroditsky with a memorial award.

Federation president Dvorkovich later confirmed that all of Kramnik's public statements about Naroditsky, before and after his death, would be referred to the organisation's Ethics and Disciplinary Commission "to be reviewed independently".

"Life and human worth are fundamental values shared by all of us," Dvorkovich stressed. "The chess community has always valued the achievements of GM Vladimir Kramnik, but such stature brings a responsibility to uphold the principles of fairness and respect."

Family's Hope

Naroditsky's family have said they hope he is remembered not for the hostility he endured but for "the joy and inspiration he provided others every day". Magnus Carlsen described him "an asset to chess", while Hikaru Nakamura described him as "among the finest".
