The Legendary Anime Concludes a Quarter-Century Era in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in January, after the current storyline concludes, the animated series will go on a quarterly break until spring, when the next major arc begins.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a six-month break that started in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the production team to improve the animation quality and allow the comic to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to supply fans with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is presently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the series adapting one chapter, with others instead handling one and a half chapters or additional to make up for time.

This concludes of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of creation, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have numerous filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between installments and the following. Today, series creation is organized in seasons, with a couple at most releasing each annually, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
