Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
