European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
