RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of entry passages providing entry to the facility... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "Including them were a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

During December, the US military executed what it termed a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
